A one-year residential fellowship programme for young scholars and professionals, curated to develop their research capabilities, skills and expertise.
Fellows engage meaningfully with a discipline and research area which they are interested in, through active mentorship and research supervision.
During the first semester, students finish required and optional coursework. In the second, they complete a 4-month long internship, preferably within a Research Centre in JGU.
The programme is designed for students interested to pursue higher education as well as for those wanting to work on research-based jobs in the industry.
My time at the PGDRI was academically enriching and intellectually stimulating. Studying Future Studies alongside Advanced Research Methods and Advanced Research Writing was particularly useful. In hindsight, it significantly improved how I read, write and process things. The myriad elective options at JGU were also of significant help, especially to those interested in furthering their interests in a niche area. An inherent part of the PGDRI is the student-mentor relationship, and I believe that is what sets the PGDRI apart. I had the opportunity to work closely with my mentor, which enabled me to research and navigate my academic field better. The internship component ties up all the diverse elements of the PGDRI together and gives it a more pragmatic approach.
Greetings, I am Prateek Singh Yadav, an alumnus of JSLH and a former student of the PGDRI batch of 2021‑2022. As I was on the cusp of completing my undergraduate degree from JSLH in 2021, I came across a new program being offered by the school, being endorsed as an additional fourth year to the undergraduate degree. I quickly realized that quite a lot of prestigious institutions around the globe require their applicants to have a full 16 years of education as a prerequisite. I further garnered that one key aim of the PGDRI was to narrow the learning curve one must go through when upgrading from undergraduate to postgraduate status. Hence, I was hooked, and in hindsight, I am glad I decided to enrol. The program allowed me to learn essential skills required to conduct advanced research. The additional year helped me dive further into my area of interest by taking various electives and pursuing a long‑term internship, which also elevated my resume before grad school. The program structure is designed with a futuristic approach, including a course named future studies. I believe this adds to the program's value as it transforms and differentiates it from a regular advanced research skills program.
Needless to say, the program requires one to write a capstone project (thesis), and the entire writing process truly turns out to be an invaluable addition to not only one's skills but also research experience at such an early stage of their academic career. This thesis might also provide the platform to further engage in higher‑level research on the topic if and when you decide to pursue a graduate degree. The mentorship aspect of the program was one of the key highlights for me. My mentor, Professor Mariya Jilinskaya‑Pandey, taught me many valuable lessons through our meetings over the year‑long process of writing my capstone project. Her teachings continue to aid me immensely in my postgraduate journey as well. Currently, I am pursuing a postgraduate degree in Organizational Psychology from the University of Leeds. With the little experience of grad school that I have had now, I can comfortably say that if done right, PGDRI can be just the right bridge to smoothen one's transition from being an undergraduate student to a postgraduate student.
PGDRI has been nothing less than a tremendous learning experience. This programme was the perfect fit to strengthen my research skills and understand the subject areas essential for my future plans. I am currently working as a Category Manager at Urban Company, and in many ways, my capstone project centred on the gig economy has helped me attain this position. As ours was a small cohort, our learning process, our group projects and our interaction with the professors worked out at a one‑on‑one level which not only helped me gain deeper insights and provided a platform to learn and unlearn many things.
In a nutshell, PGDRI was the right balance to venture into another field of learning while maintaining my connection with my primary business field.
The PGD in Research & Innovation as part of the PGDRIme truly elevated my academic credibility when it came to research & critical skills, which I needed for my professional growth. As an undergraduate in BA L&H with a major in Psychology, I wished to specialize in the field of machine learning & mental disorders, which required advanced research abilities. PGDRI gave me an in‑depth understanding of cutting‑edge research writing & research methods, along with an opportunity to create an independent research project under the guidance of a mentor. I believe the programme design & components are the fundamental reason why my academic exposure and capability have enhanced significantly. Additionally, the programme also entailed an extended internship, which gave me the space to explore the theory in real life and build up my work experience along with my specialization. PGDRI truly gave me academic freedom, with advanced guided skills & on‑groundwork experience, which a student who wished to enter a novel field wanted to study. Credited to this, I'm happy to share that I'm currently studying the MSc in Brain Imaging & Cognitive Neuroscience at the University of Birmingham & am grateful for the skills given by the PGDRI programme, which made me a scholar for my future career!
Being a part of the PGDRI has been an incredibly enriching experience for me. As a research‑ oriented programme, it has provided a holistic approach to the projects I have undertaken during my tenure here. Despite being online due to restrictions posed by the pandemic, the professors and my fellow batch mates ensured a sense of camaraderie. An ecosystem of growth and learning was built through consistent communication, interactive classes and feedback sessions.
For me, PGDRI has been a one‑of‑a‑kind learning experience. I firmly believe that my takeaways from this course have helped me add value to my current role as a Research and Counselling Psychology Intern at a mental health organisation‑MindTribe.
The PGDRI, in its truest sense, carries forward the ethos of the Jindal School of Liberal arts and Humanities (JSLH) and promotes inclusivity, learning, critical thinking and an attitude of being open to novel experiences.
